Dionysian Hedonism and Artistic Melancholy

 

Some people on Facebook or social media swing between these two symptoms: dionysian hedonism and melancholy, as if in bipolar disorder. They often glorify drug use, sexuality, love, the female body, etc from the liberal mindset. After a while, they break into a dark abyss and show signs of disappointment, sadness, emptiness or depression, etc. From that melancholic end, they derive a painful pleasure from those dark emotions and return to the hedonistic end. These people often express philosophical and deep literary ideas about life and death. But upon hearing a lame rumour, they can be seen commenting like " මයිනා මැරිල ද?" and so on. They perceive religion, culture or traditional social conventions as reasons for their unsatisfactory and confused life and want to get rid of them to achieve.
